Pranayama

Pranayama is a practice in yoga that involves regulating the breath through various techniques and exercises. The term comes from Sanskrit, where “prana” means life force or vital energy (often referred to as breath), and “ayama” means control or extension. Thus, pranayama refers to the control or expansion of one’s breath and energy.

Pranayama techniques typically involve:

  • Inhalation (Puraka) – Breathing in a controlled and mindful way.
  • Retention (Kumbhaka) – Holding the breath for a specific period after inhalation.
  • Exhalation (Rechaka) – Releasing the breath in a controlled manner.
  • Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana) – Balancing breath through alternate nostrils.
  • Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati) – Rapid and forceful exhalations followed by passive inhalations.
  • Ujjayi (Victorious Breath) – Constricting the throat slightly while breathing to create a soft sound.
